One of the real benefits of BYOD is the ability to do quick and meaningful formative assessments before, during and after lessons. Below are some highly recommended tools - each with their own strengths, so you may find one works better than another...depending on the purpose.

Socrative
  • Designed specifically for schools
  • Apps are available for both Teacher and Student in ios and android versions, but can also be done via the internet. District-issued iPads have both Teacher and Student apps downloaded. Have students download their own Student app and/or use the web-based version - Teacher provides the "room" so no 'sign-up'.
  • Can develop questions as Multiple Choice or Short Answer. Images to enhance questions can be added.
  • Quizzes can be shared with others
  • Administer 'on the fly' or with prepared questions as student-paced or teacher-paced
  • Can randomize answer choices, disable right/wrong feedback and hide question explanations
  • Results are emailed to you in spreadsheet form
  • A spreadsheet of shared quizzes from the Socrative community (primarily K-12, but perhaps something applicable)

Infuse Learning

  • Can shuffle questions, audio and translation abilities
  • Results can be emailed and/or downloaded from the site

Poll Everywhere
  • Not designed specifically for schools
  • Students can text in answers or use internet, no apps
  • Can develop questions as Multiple Choice or Short Answer.
  • Can be embedded in PowerPoint or Keynote presentation - results come in live

Google Forms
  • Create a Google Account or use your gmail account
  • Create a Google Form which can then be embedded into Edmodo
  • Results show up in your Google Account in either spreadsheet or chart form

Kahoot!
  • Web-based
